Komainu is a spiritual animal introduced to Japan with Buddhism in ancient era.
They usually appear as a pair. The one on the right side is kind of lion originated from ancient India or Persia,
The other one on the left side is imaginary spiritual animal whose appearance is alike with dog or lion having a single horn on the head.
Ordinarily only the later one is called Komainu, but generally people call pair of them komainu.
Their stone statues are placed for protecting sacred places, on both side of the entrance of Shinto shrine, Japanese original religion.
Komainus is also placed on some Buddhist temples because they came to Japan with Buddhism.
