The beautiful white Nabeshima porcelain statue of the Avalokitesvara (Kannon, 観音) is made in Saga Prefecture, Japan. Nabeshima ware traces its origins back to around 1629 and was originally high-grade porcelain for shoguns and feudal lords.(Nabeshima ware - Wikipedia)
The face and fingertips of this statue are very finely crafted with high techniques. In her/his hand is a water jar, the water inside of which is said to never dry up and to represent infinite merit. Avalokitesvara is a well-known bodhisattva that appears in the Heart Sutra, and although it often has a feminine appearance, it is considered to be a gender-bending being that is neither female nor male.
